Odd Finds of Custom Designs

While backing up my old G4 I found this file within a file and laughed my sweet bottom off. Here we have a design where the company I worked for wanted a series of bikes to pitch to the IBM's. I got to pretty much do everything on these, from design, paint and decal production. The designs were kept simple as we had only two days to do all three samples. One Rigid, one Hardtail and one Full Suspension. for some reason we had these Troy Lee orange Fenders laying about and they wanted to work them into the design, which led to the General Lee like design.

Winnipeg first, tomorrow, the World!

Born and raised in Winnipeg Manitoba, Clodhoppers first made it's marketable debut in the basement of Chris with a group of friends who were able to munch out on his Grannies Family recipe. Through fandom and suggestive business practise, Kraves Candy was created and introduced Clodhoppers to the Winnipeg and local markets in 1998 with Local Manitoba Wal-Marts before hitting the Big time in 1999 with Safeway and BC's Overwaitea Foods.

This was the First sign to expose them to their new market:) It was produced while I was employed with Contempra Signs in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

At the time, Clodhoppers was only available with the original recipe of Vanilla but Chris dropped of a rather large box of Milk Chocolate with Jammi and I to taste test and give our opinions. Will gladly accepted and proceeded to munch away throughout the day, casually wiping the messy sticky fingers on our pants before tapping away at the keyboards or vinyl cutters. about four hour or so later (say 4pm) Chris stopped by to pick up some of his signs to find us rather full as we pushed a half empty box over the counter to him to look in with a laughing smile. "So you like them then, do you think they will sell?"

As they moved up in the World of candy retail, they introduced that same Milk Chocolate, and followed up with Dark Chocolate, Chocolate Fudge, Cookies and Clods (which actually is a trademarked) and Peanut Butter, which is now discontinued.

I am so very proud of how successful Clodhoppers became and that I was able to be there in the beginning of such a tasty product. Interestingly enough, Clodhoppers followed me to British Columbia and moved to Abbotsford and re-branded it's entire product line with a new title of "Chris and Larry's Clodhoppers, and eventually selling it's full assets to Brookside Foods.

The iPF500 has two types of black ink – photo black and matte black (MBK) – which extends the range of media that the device can print onto, including glossy and matte paper. This means that productivity has escalated dramatically whilst maintaining the quality and consistency of the black ink at high speed – critical in CAD applications where speed and accuracy are paramount.

Somewhere between now and then, I have met a lot of great people, both talented and diverse in their skills and person that they took upon themselves the brave step to become more then a number on someones payroll. It's a challenge of all challenges to be ones own boss. The stories of the Rich and Famous, the lazy days of just sitting back and watching the bank accounts fill up like champagne cascading with the perfect shimming light while we plan the next big idea and pass it along, are all but a story. The truth is, we as Entrepreneurs are either still working a FT job while we are working towards Independence or jumped into the water to get as wet as it gets. I am proud to be in both those waters and to help in the first steps of getting people to know who they are and what they do, by the means of a business card and branding programs.

There is something to be said for free design, especially when it is for a gag for friends:)

I have some friends who moved to Costa Rica in November of 2010 and have since started an online marketing company and placed marketing material and videos with information explaining the business strategies and amazing locations they are able to live with such a choice of employment. Well, I took it upon myself to redirect the light openness of Tanya and Brandon initial ad by added my own personal sweetness, and companion= The Cookie Monster.

Sometimes even the most absurd "design" can be just as well thought out professionally produced projects, as this was reposted several times and linked with much delight and laughter.

Just a fast note here as i am rushing out the door for my day job.

Has anyone ever noticed how terrible Acrobat's save as jpeg option is in regards to end raster? Not much for settings even with Professional. I found some very old drafts for my portfolio and now stripping it all down as i need to build up my portfolio right proper finally. guess it matters not how much work i do, or the variety, if no one can see it or i do not represent it well in terms of presentation, online, or in hard copies.

I was lucky enough to have worked with Stockwell's program for a "greener Earth and transport program. The design in the background is on a bio banner with uncoated grommets (which usually have a coating to keep them from aging (and thus leech into the ground.) the inks were enviro-inks from Roland and although do not have a UV protection program they are perfect for temporary campaigns such as this program (temporary meaning it only get used a few times until a new series of designs gets used- not the actual concept of the client).

With the new year approaching and the end of this very odd 2009, I am glad to say I am a lucky lucky Man.

I was given a Mac PowerBook from a total stranger and now have it up and running with new software to take on the designs and clients I have been sadly neglecting due to my G$ tower, as perfect as it once was, no longer was able to offer reliable functionality to complete, or even take on new work and offer deadline accuracy.

So, with great excitement I am proud to announce a new, fresh system with transport options intact, to create new art and design for all to enjoy!

Everything but Web....

To state the subject title is fairly accurate considering some of the design projects i get. This custom job was one of the funniest i have ever done, and as it turns out, one of the hardest jobs Chris Dekerf of Dekerf™ custom Bikes, has ever come across. Now the design was not hard, but the project overall, in my transport getting it there, being that it ways a heavy chunk of classic metal and Chris' reducing the paint to the original metal, and then creating the swirl process the Client, one creative Artist in her own right, deeply desired. By the time this simple paint reduction and DEcal design project was done, it totaled a larger portion of 3 weeks!

Overall, as i always LOVE to hear, she was happy, he was happy, and we all hugged and sang in cheering satisfaction. Another Peg Design Collaboration complete with a smiling client.

Cherries on the Beach

Decided to sit on the beach with a friend, and pull out some new markers and thin line felts. This was the outcome. Her name is relative to the illustration. she loved it, and now wants it as her Tattoo. I think i will have to modify it a bit and then pass it on:) As and after sort of action, i was then handed over 20lbs of Cherries in a box, freshly picked from trees only three days earlier to take home. I of course couldn't do such a thing with out sharing with friends and strangers so after i arrived at home, showered and cleaned my self off form the Tofino/ Uclulet trip, i found only about two small containers of cherries worth keeping. turns out my guest on the way back ate more then they most likely could deal with, and i am sure were very sick due to eating so many. so, cherries, all around, through art and tongue;)

It's been awhile since I was able to do any artwork, and now with a new place to live in, and lots of balcony space for a studio like setting, this blog will be taking on more and more actual artwork and dimensional pieces.

Raven Skate Shop shoot

Awhile ago I Had a great person to help me along with my casual modeling needs. We spent the day taking snaps for some clothing of mine that was never photographed before, and since I was building up Web content, it was badly needed. This was over a year and a half now, and I Only just got around to a Blog;) I do admit, my photography skills are not up to par for doing such work so I think the next time I need to do this, I will hire a professional.

My Friends Erik and Jayelle once owned Raven Skate Shop in Tofino, Bc. It ran for about 3-4 years and was/ is very well known. I did all the basic file set ups and some design for them and they produced a lot of clothing, some of which i was able to get, some not. In the attempts to create a web site with a variety of products i have deigned for over the years I delayed the creation due to a continuous workload, not something i will mistakenly do again.

The above pictures are just some of the shoot, the tree was a fantastic find, what with it's rich winding roads catching anything it grew into. The last quartered layout was for a booklet i was going to surprise Erik and Jayelle with, but they shut the doors before i was able to give it to them.

Overall, the Raven project was a joy and I was glad to have worked with Raven and the team that I also get to enjoy as close talented friends.

Sadly, this is my everyday as i struggle to deal with my poor, poor Gwillion. Yes, Gwillion would be my Mac G4, a 2001 one 733 model that has NEVER malfunctioned until last summer, when all hell broke loose. Really, the gates were left open by some random child and things have never really been the same. Now, i am not saying Hell is a bad place really, it's just up for changes most do not understand or enjoy. with these new changes we adapt and modify ourselves, thus evolving, and potentially growing in more the more, but a truer self. I found something to do last night due to not having Gwillion to rely on and get some work done. The option was to go to the library to pick up "a" book. Well one hour in the isles and i knew i was hooked lined and sunk into the world of caption, dialogue, forms and screen printed events, eras and unified decimal points connected by strings of history, only to walk out with another 45lbs of reading and visual materials to assist in my new weeks of project development.

So, while i pursue new clients in the hopes of gaining enough income to scrap by and manage a new mac and accompanying software (yes, due to the new Pentium chip i will be needing a new CS4 kit to run as well as Office 2008 instead of my trusty 2004) , i will toss back few cold ones, offered by my tap of choice, sadly dispersing only water laced with fluoride, and sketch away my rainy blues of electric and binary woes.

This is one of my first Vancouver snow sculptures. It was after a friends birthday and i was meeting the party back at another friends place and had to wait for sometime. IOt was rainy and the snow become a wet slop and yet retained it's shape more then i expected and clung like vine shoot to the cement wall along the driveway stairs.

Not much for a budget as the organizer basically operates this as a special interest non profit event, but it was rather fun to see all the classic cars in such amazing shape. there were many concepts made and all pretty different as for styles, but in the end, the classic rock style won the round.

Red, Blue, no wait, Red...

What is your favourite colour? In an earlier post i declared the colour code issues with China and Canada, or at least my specs sheets. Well here is a direct example of what i meant, in all the glory of my old 1.6 mega pixel Kodak Camera:) Sadly, for the 2 years i designed these products i failed to properly document them for a portfolio, on account of there was just so much work and not nearly enough time to think of a personal goal, a solid reflection of over 300 designs. The London Drugs was found on a bike in Victoria BC, somewhere near the Ferry while waiting to go back home from a very cold weekend of snow and slushy BEER with Big E, one of the two owners of the previously Tofino's Raven Skate Shop.

Now Mr. Black there, well he never made the cut, and not for reason of everyone wanting to be Mr.Black and Mr. Pink getting all whiny again. No, this was due to licensing and another name was already bought and paid for. what did i do? Well i did what any self respecting creative would do, i blurred the copy, added the new name and kept the artwork i believed to be the best for the product. Yes, that is my face on over 300,000 bikes out there on the streets of the world- it was bound to happen. I still think the Top Bike companies are missing out on some great possibilities for design on bikes, but their getting it a bit more now...

This was hand drawn at first, but then after researching the items i wanted to use as reference i realized the effect i wanted was more then pen and ink, so my PS skills came to light and the baby boy was born.

London Drugs licenses the name of Dunlop for it's bike and push scooter lines and this is one of the product stamps designed. The second was used and for some reason came back from China as red instead of blue. Blue and red was a constant problem with China, even though colour codes are numerically set... I will never get that one;)

I am a very active person and try to maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes cycling, swimming, hiking and various other activities. I spend a fair amount of my time volunteering for social events, either by helping to produce the event or designing products used to promote them. Royal Le Page gets a new Look!

When I was approached by Natalie Husband of Royal LePage Westin, she was wanting something very different from the current layouts being used, primarily am image of the Realtor and a random house with contact information.

She was very proud of her new car so I suggested we focus on the body lines and base logo design. The end project was a well formed, solid impact vehicle graphics that has given her a bold stand out in the BC Interior, and a very identifiable advertising agent.

One of the most challenging positions I have follow up on, by either a staff member of as Peg DEsign, as been that of designing and painting for the bike industry. To this date, i still see a constant flow of my designs at any given day throughout the week. Now, i also designed a fair amount of snowboards for some of the same companies and have never seen a single board with my designs on them, well maybe a few...

The North Shore News had this on the front cover this past summer, and it blew me away that that particular bike was being raced, and that she did rather well with it. It was a price point of $259.00 back in 2002- 2004 and i think i was changed (frame wise) after then, so the bike basically was a low cost casual mountain bike, intended for weekend campgrounds, not a triathlon! I was very proud of this woman when i read this.

The above are some of the designs that made it out. The Cove bike was ridden by Trevor Porter, now currently with Kona for the 2003 World Cup in Scotland. The Graphics has incorporated sponsor logos and Rider names to flow along the frames curved design. The back end was a prototype at the time and so it was left with me to play around with while it was unfinished. The job was simple and i was never really paid for it, but Trevor did rebuild my front forks:) The Antelope was a fun set of graphics that was never used. The base bikes came in with an exist paint scheme that had two tone splits the client liked
and so i had to design 6 bikes all with blockers. Not many companies save Specialized, Giant and Trek use this technique, even with the newer printing methods available.

This is still an industry i would like to be more involved with and will be setting up my own dirt machine with new paint and matching graphics, which of course will be presented later on this blog.

Puff up and Burn

I have been told that I have no specific style. That my work is all over the place and thereby it's hard to decide on what to say or what style i best resemble. so i think i will create a series and pick it well, to make myself known by either creating a new look, or making copies of the best I find will represent me.

These two are just to examples of pencil and marker from years back. I love to keep the old ideas and grab from the pile of yet to be used work and go from there to make then useful. After all, we all just want to be useful to someone don't we;)

Product Design; Bicycles

Model: Electra

Client: Costco

Task: Design graphics to fit frame and design and paint paint scheme to match. Package design was also created and a one day photo shoot for the project was given. The Electra was one of Costco's best selling children's bikes sold to date.

Outcome: Production of over 300,000 units to date.
